2 REFLECTION ON BELBIN
Introduction
A well known theory which believes that each individual possesses a particular type of
behavioral characteristics which is different when compared to others and helps a team to
progress is referred to as Belbin. The Belbin theory was first suggested by Meredith Belbin in
the year 1981. An indi vidual can execute a number of behaviors at various times, but there is
a certain behavior that is effective for the progress of a team 1. Such behaviors are collected
into a group of linked clusters, where the label “Team role” is applicable. It is stated by
Meredith Belbin that a team consisting of variety of behaviors performs well in long run. In
order to make a team capable from all spheres it is important to make use of all unique
behaviors of the team members i n the correct time. Therefore it is important for any team
member to select the correct team roles suitable for themselves.
Belbin has proposed a team role model and has categorized team roles into nine types. The
team roles proposed by Belbin are Resourc e investigator, Co -ordinate, Teamwork, Plant,
Specialist, Monitor evaluator, Shaper, Completer finisher and Implementer 2. I think that each
team role possesses strengths and weaknesses. Now the characteristics that benefits the team
are referred to as the strengths and the characteristics that promote the strengths are referred
to as the weaknesses 3. It is understood that if the strengths of a team role supersede the
weaknesses of the team role and also if the weakness does not affect the team performance
then it is considered as allowable weakness. Now if the weaknesses supersede the strengths
of the particular team role or the strengths seem missing then the weaknesses of the team role
are considered to be non -allowab le weakness.

3 REFLECTION ON BELBIN
There are certain procedu res to understand and evaluate team role of an individual. The
factors that affect the team role evaluation are namely, self -perception inventory (SPI),
Observer assessment (OA) and percentiles.
For (SPI) the form or questionnaires that an individual fill s or answers to define ones team
roles. This questionnaire has eight segments and each segment consists of ten parts. The user
is supposed to dedicate ten marks to each section to the points that gives more or less
appropriate reflection of the working sty le of the individual 4. Again for (OA) t he
questionnaire that is formed is supposed to get filled by the person who knows the self –
perception person deeply. The individuals who are supposed to answer the observer
assessment questionnaire are selected from t he ones who have spent time and worked with
concerned individual recently and quite closely. Members from the same team are preferred
because team roles have a tendency to change along with time and the particular situations.
Percentile is the method of ca lculating the position of an individual compared to others.
When a big group takes the test to evaluate the team roles, the received score is then judged
from the highest to the lowest. The score of an individual is judged in comparison to the rest
of the scores.
As it is seen from the above description, according to me Belbin is a robust procedure
divided into specific activities which enhances the technique of identifying one’s team role,
hence this method is extremely beneficial in small group work. A small group has limited
number of members hence it is easy to divide the team roles among the members and allocate
the task accordingly 5. All nine team roles proposed by Belbin have unique strengths and
weaknesses therefore having members in a small team, each having each of the nine team
roles satisfie s the needs of a team.

4 REFLECTION ON BELBIN
I personally prefer to belong in an innovative atmosphere as it gives me opportunities to think
openly and communicating with other people and exchanging ideas helps me to grow.
There fore I think the team roles of plant and resource investigator suits me well.
The strengths of a resource investigator can be described as enthusiastic, outgoing and
communicative. An individual with such characteristics prefers to explore chances, develo p
and make good use of contacts. Again this team role also possess weaknesses such as once
the individual executing such characteristics reach the peak of enthusiasm, lacks interest on
the same subject. Also such individuals are more optimistic than requir ed at times 6. Now the
strengths involved in the plant team role are that they are imaginative, creative and generates
new ideas and solves difficult problems innovatively. The allowable weaknesses in this team
role is that they stay already engaged with ot her tasks so lacks communication and also
bothers less about the factors such as expenses.
I can relate to these two particular team roles prominently because I appreciate new ideas
from others and also try to generate new ideas in order to solve complicat ed problems. In this
procedure I enjoy communicating and find new connections to explore new opportunities
which can assist me in the method of providing new ideas. Being a plant and resource
investigators I can contribute positively to the industry becaus e it has reached the stage where
innovation is extremely valued. As innovation is always in need and will never lose its
importance there is a great scope for me in future to expand my career.
I have also realized the fact that at the time of generating an idea I tend to ignore certain
practical factors involved in the project. In an already well framed atmosphere people might
not like innovative ideas and feel threatened 7. Therefore prior to the implementation pha se it

is important to check if the ground of the idea is adequately prepared. Hence I think to make
sure a new idea in a project is being executed properly, all nine team roles are e ssential.
Once in the initial stages the new plan is proposed by me as the plant and resource
investigator, the plan needs to get communicated to the coordinator who is playing anothe r
team role. The strengths involved in this team role are that the individual is experienced,
confident and has the ability to identify talents. Th is team role also has a clear vision about
the goals and is a very good spokes -person. The allowable weaknesses involved in this team
role are that the character can be manipulative at times and distributes personal the work load
on others. The coordinator further identifies the individuals suitable for the team roles namely
specialists, sharper, and imple me nter.
The strengths associated with the team role of specialists are that they are dedicated, works
on particular subject and have immense knowledge on that particular domain. They are
usually self -starting and single minded 8. The parallel weaknesses involved with this team role
are that they only contribute to a particular domain and mostly handle technicalities. The
strengths of a shaper is that they a re challenging, has the capability and wish to solve
problems. The allowable weakness of this team role is that they have high chances to act to
provocations and also is not much bothered about other’s feeling. The strengths involved with
the team role of an implementer is that they have good practical sense, responsible and
efficient. They perform a big task that is convert ideas to actions and knows which activity
has to be done after what. The allowable weaknesses of this team role are that they do not
prefer to respond to new procedures that are they are somewhat infle xib le.
Each of these team role require another team role under them that is team worker. The
strengths of this team role can be described as extremely co -operative, diplomatic, adjusting

and observant. Such type of team roles prefers to avoid confusions 9. Again the weakness
associated with this team role is that, such individuals avoids facing situations and fluctuate
in tough environments. All these team roles are managed by the monitor, t he primary strength
of this team role is that the judgment is properly done by this team role. This team role
observes all possible options and makes strategies accordingly and behaves in a sober
manner 10. The weaknesses associate with this team role is tha t it lacks the characteristics to
inspire others and can be over critical at times.
At the end of the project, role of the completer finisher begins. This team role comes with the
strength to search out for errors and flaws in a project, is conscientious, painstaking and
anxious. They remove the issues in a project and polish the same to bring perfection. The
weaknesses associated with this team role are that they worry excessively and bother less
about delegates.
Conclusion
It is evident that all the ni ne team roles of belbin are considered to be essential in order to
make a team perform. The speciality of each team role adds up to the success of the team.
The team role of the plan and resource investigator needs to be assisted by the rest of the
team ro les to flourish and develop the industry in present and in future 11. The team working
theories helps the team to collaborate, communicate and establish personal project roles
producing a good project outcome.
