Use EITHER Mary McCleod Bethune’s speech OR A. Philip Randolph’s speech for this assignment. Do the following:
1) Find a significant or compelling quotation from the speechthat you think illuminates a main argument or theme of the the speech.
Type up that quotation IN FULL, use a page reference in parentheses at the end. Make sure to use enough of the speaker’s language to illustrate the argument or theme as thoroughly as possible.
2) Explain what the quotation means to you. How do you interpret it?
Here you should be paying attention to the speakers language. What are the words he or sheuses? What do they mean? What metaphors or outside references might the speaker be using? What ideas or arguments do they convey?
3) Explain how the quotation reflects some broader aspect of the speech.
This last task is important. It asks you to think about your quotation holistically, as a part of a larger argument. What else is the speakertalking about in this speech? Make your case about what you see as a main argument or theme of a speech. There are never any single correct answers!
