Philip Hallie The Evil That Men Do (Skip William Bennett)

(1) In the From Cruelty to Goodness reading, Philip Hallie is trying to understand and grasp the essence of Cruelty, Hallie says he finally recognized That a disparity in power lay at the center of the dynamism of crueltyThe power of the majority and the weakness of the minority were at the center of the institutional cruelty of slavery and of Nazi anti-Semitism. What does he mean? Give examples. PP 1011
(2) In From Hallie quotes part of a speech from head of the SS Heinrich Himmler to express how Institutionalized Cruelty operated to dilute and justify the atrocities of the Holocaust: . We fulfilled the heaviest of tasks [destroying the Jews] in love to our people. And we suffered no harm in our essence, in our soul, in our character. P 9 Why does Himmler say, We suffered no harm in our soul and character? What is his reasoning here? Explain.
(3) Hallie discusses a letter he received from a critique who disagreed with his thesis that Le Chambon was such a remarkably shinning example of Goodness in action. (P. 18) He gives 2 main reasons: (1) the critique refers to the Holocaust itself as similar to a geological event, like an earthquake. He regards it as ethically or morally inert as a hurricane or natural wildfire, something that human beings cannot control. So neither was the Holocaust good nor evil but something that just happened like any other natural catastrophe. By implication, the moral status of the Holocaust is morally equivalent to Hurricane Katrina (2) The critic claims that Individual actions are likewise meaningless such as the Priest & community of Le Chambon caring for the thousands of Jewish orphans and keeping them from being turned into the Nazis. He says since no one person or individual action started the war so no person or individual action could stop the holocaust. What do you suppose he means by this? Carefully explain. Do you think hes right why or why not? Do you agree or disagree that, No one person could start it, no person could change it and only masses and armies and not individual actions make a difference or matter? If the critic is right that terrible moral and social political events such as American Slavery or the Holocaust are no different than any other kind of natural disaster then what do we think about Schindler who helped saved several hundred Jews as well as the Christian village of Le Chambon rescuing thousands of Jewish orphans? Margret Mead famously said something like Never underestimate the power of a small committed group of people to change the world. Indeed, that is the only thing that ever has. In what ways does her view stand in stark opposition of Hallies critic?
(4) Cruelty, whatever else it is, is a kind of power relationship. In what ways is Hallies assessment of Institutional Cruelty similar to Shelby Steeles account of Racism in Im Black, Youre White, Whos Innocent?
(5) Counter to conventional thinking, Hallie does not believe that Kindness is the opposite of Cruelty but rather something else. What is it?
(6) In Hallies The Evil That Men ThinkAnd Do he Says Victims are as essential to morality as the presence or absence of sympathy. What do you think he means?
(7) Hallie is critical of several different theories of Evil that he believes trivializes or minimizes the truly horrific things that humans beings can and have done. Why does he think Edward Bennett is wrong in his view of Heinrich Himmler? Explain.
(8) During the Nuremburg Trials most of the Nazi war criminals defended their actions by claiming they were just following orders. That they acted out of Duty and Obligation. (This should all sound very Kantian). What about such excuses, according to Hallie dont excuse or justify such evil deeds?
