The challenge here is to write a clear, concise, and carefully-worded summary that sufficiently explains the main premises and conclusion of the reading. In order to do this, you may want to focus less on the examples and minor details covered in the reading; but focus more on important terms and concepts, and on major argument points. All-in-all, each word and sentence in your writeup should be carefully framed in a way that sufficiently captures the authors’ whole argument, and sufficiently demonstrates that you have understood the whole reading (rather than merely parts or bits and pieces of the reading).

In addition, your paper should engage with – even if briefly – at least one other reading assigned for that section or topic. Your engagement with this other reading should also demonstrate that you understand the whole of that reading. However, please do not write a second summary. Your OP should instead explain how this second reading might interact with, respond to, or criticize the primary reading that your prcis is focused on.

There is no need to write your own commentary, evaluation, or reflections of this reading in the OP. The primary focus of the assignment is to see how well you can understand and inhabit the philosophers’ positions in the reading. Our class discussion and Major Paper assignments will integrate the evaluative aspects.
